Police Department
The Bainbridge Township Police Department was founded on June 13, 1975. Initially the department consisted of a chief and four patrolmen. In September, 1989, a full-time communication center was established serving all police, fire, and rescue services within Bainbridge Township. By 1992, the police force in Bainbridge consisted of fourteen full-time officers and four part-time officers.
Currently there are eighteen full-time officers and two part-time officers. To be a Bainbridge police officer, you must have a four year degree in any field, an associate's degree in Criminal Justice or five full years of previous service. In service training programs and law enforcement-related courses are encouraged and provided. These programs are necessary to constantly improve the efficiency of individual members. In addition to the officers, there are six dispatchers, one records clerk/dispatcher and an administrative assistant.
On average, the Bainbridge Police Department receives over 8000 calls for crimes against persons and property and makes over 300 arrests annually. The department currently operates with eight marked squad cars and several unmarked vehicles used for surveillance and investigations.
In August, 2004, the Bainbridge Twp. Police Department moved into their new building on Bainbridge Rd. The new station includes a state-of-the-art communications center, expanded evidence-processing rooms, holding cells, a five bay shooting range and a physical fitness center. A records room provides easy access to four years of police reports. With the increase in investigative work, especially involving fraud and identity-theft cases, more space has been provided for the department's growing detective and investigative units.
The department provides a number of community related programs to enhance interaction and understanding among the residents which include D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) and Block Watch, a neighborhood watch program. A Safety Town Program for elementary school children is scheduled each summer to teach youngsters the importance of general safety. The department also has a K-9 named Tango who has been with the department for three years. Tango is trained in search and rescue apprehension and narcotics.
